With the cost of energy steadily rising and no shortage of sun in the southern United States, it is not surprising that the State of California has jumped aboard the solar power bandwagon with the lofty goal of creating 3,000 megawatts of new solar produced electricity by 2017. The California Solar Power Initiative brainchild of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will provide $2.8 billion dollars in incentives for customers in order to entice them to place solar energy panels on existing residential, public, industrial, agricultural and business buildings.
In addition to the $2.8 billion dedicated to existing buildings the California Energy Commission will try to entice builders and developers of new home projects with $400 million in solar energy incentives.
California is a great example of a place where innovation and advocacy has combined to result in sustainable energy production. Solar power is both sustainable and has actually become more affordable in recent years. Thanks to government subsidies and advancing technology, the cost of solar power units can range anywhere from approximately $1,500 to $25,000 for your home. Initially the payout for these systems can seem high, but when you consider that over the life of the product you will be paying far less each month for your electricity bill it sure can add up!
